Number of incidents in 2008 - 19

24 Apr 2008 - Newhaven Coastguard Team tasked to report of an 11 year old boy cut off by the tide at the Badgers Watch in Peacehaven. Brighton RNLI Lifeboat and a Coastguard Helicopter were also tasked. Once on scene the Coastguard Rope Rescue Team sent a technician down to the boy who was rescue using a rescue strop. Te boy and technician were then recovered to the top of the cliff using the tugger pulley system. The boy was then put into the care of his mother who had arrived on scene. 06 Apr 2008 - Newhaven Initial Response Team tasked to meet Newhaven RNLI Lifeboat at Brighton Marina. The lifeboat was towing a private vessel which had suffered a problem with a bilge hose. Details and advice given before the vessel completed repairs and returned on its passage.

05 Apr 2008 - Newhaven Initial Response Team tasked to operate East Brighton Park Helicopter Landing Site. Rescue Mike Uniform (helicopter) was landing with a male found intoxicated on the footpath on the Seven Sisters. The male was unable to wal out and helicopter evacuation was requested by Birling Gap Coastguard. Portsmouth Sector Manager who was training with the Birling Gap Team accompanied the male and was transported back to Newhaven by the IRT.

02 Apr 2008 - Newhaven Initial Response Team tasked to meet a fishing vessel  which was entering Newhaven Harbour with a crewman on board who had fallen overboard during fishing operations. Crewman checked by Paramedics before being allowed home. Details of incident taken and passed to MAIB for further investigation.

01 Apr 2008 - Newhaven Initial Response Team tasked to report of vessel broken down and swamped off Seaford. Newhaven RNLI Lifeboat tasked tow vessel back to Newhaven. Coastguards provided advice to skipper.

27 Mar 2008 - Newhaven Initial Response Team tasked to assist with a male casualty onboard a small passenger vessel arriving in Brighton Marina. Man checked out by paramedics and sent home with advice.

17 Mar 2008 - Newhaven Initial Response Team and South Downs Sector Manager tasked to report of a male on the cliff edge at Seaford Head. Sector Manager assisted police in detaining a drunken male. male arrested under mental health act.

Following above incident - Newhaven Full Team tasked to report of 14 year old female reported to be heading for Seaford Head with the intention of self harming. Search conducted in area by Coastguards and Newhaven RNLI Lifeboat. Female located by Sussex Police safe and well in Eastbourne.

14 Mar 2008 - Newhaven Initial Response Team tasked to Newhaven Marina to meet a vessel being towed in by Newhaven RNLI Lifeboat. Details taken and advice given.

9 Mar 2008 - Newhaven Initial Repsponse Team tasked to a report of a body in the water off Saltdean. Body located and recovered by Brighton RNLI Lifeboat. Bosy identified to be that of a known missing person.

9 Feb 2008 - Newhaven Initial Response Team tasked to report of a mine on the beach at Saltdean. On arrival Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team contacted to identify item. Item found to be inert and recovered back to Newhaven Coastguard Rescue Station for storage and onward disposal.

9 Feb 2008 - Newhaven Initial Reponse Team tasked to meet MV Sea Leopard II which had suffered a fouled propellor. Details taken.

28 Jan 08 - Newhaven Initial Reponse Team and Newhaven RNLI Lifeboat tasked to report from South East Coast Ambulance of an upturned boat drifting off the Cuckmere delta. 2 casualties from the craft had been taken to hospital by ambulance suffering from hypothermia. Their vessel had been left drifting. Vessel located by Coastguards. Newhaven RNLI Lifeboat took the craft under tow and returned to Newhaven.

25 Jan 08 - Newhaven Initial Response Team tasked to report of a man overboard marker at Rottingdean. Item recovered, beleived to be from MV Ice Prince. Item placed into storage for disposal by Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team.

21 Jan 08 - Newhaven Initial Response Team tasked to report of object in water off Ovingdean. Object recovered and found to be a liferaft from the MV Ice Prince (see 19-20 Jan 08). Item take into storage at Newhaven Coastguard Rescue Station for collection by owner.

19 -20 Jan 08 - Newhaven CRT tasked to assist Coastguard Rescue Officers from Shoreham and Littlehampton in wreck duties at Worthing Beach. Large quantities of wood were washed up on the beach. Officers provided advice to members of the public regarding safety on the beach and also wreck law and the requirement to not remove the cargo from the beach. Officers worked through the night at Worthing and then on Sunday 20th provided the same service at Newhaven and Seaford beaches.

10 Jan 08 - Report from a member of public reporting a car over the cliff east of Peacehaven. Newhaven Coastguard, Police and Ambulance tasked to investigate. On scene it was found that the car was the one which had previously been reported and investigated in August. No further action. Police Helicopter H900 also in attendance.

04 Jan 08 - Report of a body on the beach at Saltdean. Initial Response Team and Sector Manager tasked. On arrival Sussex Police on scene. Person found to have landed on promenade from clifftop. Person declared deceased on scene. Coastguard stood down.

01 Jan 08 - Report received of a dog over the cliff near to the Fort above the West Beach at Newhaven. Full team paged. Dog recovered using cliff rescue equipment and returned to owner. Dog was unharmed. Advice given to owners regarding the use of a lead on cliff tops.  Sussex Express Article
